RE: Recent Shelter at Home Order
With our city mayor’s recent Shelter at Home order, I want to keep you informed and let you know that Healing Minds Behavioral Health is considered an essential business and is exempt from the Shelter at Home order. As of 3/24/2020, our office is still open if you would like to continue (or begin) in-person psychotherapy for your child. As the current landscape of COVID-19 is fluid and constantly changing, please know that I will do my best to keep you as up to date, and as quickly, as I can.
I also continue to implement the preventive and precautionary measures recommended by the CDC in order to ensure our safety. I will have hand sanitizer available and the waiting room will be empty at all times since I am the only provider at the office during this time. Needless to say, if you believe you may have been exposed and/or are exhibiting any of the COVID-19 symptoms, please follow government guidelines on seeking immediate medical attention or staying home to quarantine. For more information, visit the CDC’s website at: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/maritime/definitions-signs-symptoms-conditions-ill-travelers.html
Another option that will be available beginning the week of 29-March will be tele-mental health, which is done virtually through a secure platform. Existing research on this topic suggests mixed results when it comes to children receiving this service. While there may be some inherent advantages and disadvantages with this option and tele-mental health may not be for everyone, it is an avenue that would allow for care to continue with minimal interruption during this time. If you are interested in tele-mental health, please let me know so that I can fill you in on the details and make the necessary arrangements with you. If you have any other questions or concerns, please know that I am available to address those with you.
I hope that you and your family can find some sense of calm and relaxation during such a challenging time. I look forward to the day when all of this is behind us. Take care and stay safe.
Sincerely,
Alejandro E. Lopez, Jr., M.A, LPC, NCC

The phrase “childhood trauma” automatically strikes a note of fear. Unfortunately, childhood trauma happens. And it can happen to children at any age—from birth through adolescence.
According to a recent article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, an estimated half of all children in the United States—approximately 35 million—will experience some form of childhood trauma prior to their eighteenth birthday.
Relationships are hard, messy, sometimes tragic, and full of unimaginable grief. But also know there is another side. That relationships can also be healing.
